What to write in a Valentine's card

The Valentine's card is oddly high-pressure for something so small — one little rectangle expected to sum up how you feel about someone you (hopefully) feel a great deal about. The way through is the same as always: skip "roses are red" and say one true, specific thing. A specific line beats a romantic-sounding one every single time.

Here's a quick formula, then messages for every stage and every kind of love — new, long, funny, and the friends-and-family sort too.

A quick formula

Open warm, say one specific thing you love about them — not love in general, them in particular — then a small wish or promise, then sign off. That specific middle line is the whole difference between your card and the one still on the shop shelf.

Romantic messages

  • Of everyone in the world, you're the one I want to be bored with on a wet Tuesday. Happy Valentine's Day.
  • I didn't know love could be this easy and this good until you. Thank you for being mine.
  • You're my favourite person, my best decision, and my home. Happy Valentine's Day.
  • I'd choose you again in a heartbeat — this year, next year, every year. I love you.

Short and sweet

  • It's still you. It's always been you.
  • My favourite person, my valentine — always.
  • Lucky doesn't quite cover it. Happy Valentine's Day.
  • All my love, today and the other 364.

Funny and low-key

  • I love you more than I love complaining, which — as you well know — is a lot.
  • Happy Valentine's Day to the person who tolerates my nonsense with minimal sighing.
  • Roses are red, this card was overpriced, and I'd still buy it every year for you.
  • You're the calm to my chaos and the answer to "who ate the last one." Love you.

For a new relationship

When "I love you" is still too soon, warm-but-honest is exactly right.

  • I don't know quite where this is going, but I really like where it is. Happy Valentine's Day.
  • Whatever this is, it's my favourite part of my weeks lately.
  • Too soon for a grand speech, so just this: I'm really glad I met you.

For long-term love

  • After all these years and all these ordinary days, I'd still pick you first. Happy Valentine's, my love.
  • Thank you for a love that got comfortable without ever getting boring. Still yours.

For friends and family

Valentine's isn't only for romance — a note to a friend, a parent, or a kid on the day lands beautifully.

  • Happy Valentine's Day to a friend I love more than most people love anything.
  • No romance required — just wanted you to know you're loved today.

Make it more than a card

If you want to say more than a card can hold, our guide to writing a love letter that isn't cheesy is the natural next step, and small ways to show someone you love them keeps it going the other 364 days. You can even pin your message to the place you met with Hiii, so it waits there for them — and if anniversaries are next, our anniversary card guide has you covered.

Nobody keeps a Valentine's card for the poem on the front. They keep it for the one true line you wrote inside.
