What to write in an anniversary card

An anniversary card is a yearly invitation to say the thing you both assume is already understood. It usually is. Say it anyway — out loud, in writing, where it can be kept. The people we love rarely tire of being told, in specific words, that we'd choose them again.

Messages for your partner and for a couple you love, sorted by mood, plus a line for the big milestone years — and the one trick that makes any of them land.

For your partner: romantic

  • A year is 365 ordinary days, and you made every one of them better just by being in it. I'd choose you again today, and tomorrow, and every year after. Happy anniversary.
  • Of all the things I've gotten right, loving you is the one I'm proudest of. Happy anniversary, my love.
  • I didn't know it was possible to keep falling for the same person. You keep proving me wrong. Happy anniversary.
  • Wherever we've been this year, home was always just wherever you were. Here's to another year of it.

For your partner: short and simple

  • Still you. Still me. Still us. Happy anniversary.
  • Every year with you is my favourite. Happy anniversary.
  • Here's to us — and to all the years still coming.
  • Same time next year, and every year. I love you.

For your partner: a little funny

  • Happy anniversary to the person who has tolerated me the longest and complained about it the least. Genuinely impressive work.
  • Another year and you still haven't returned me. You either love me or you lost the receipt. Either way, I'm keeping you.
  • Thank you for still laughing at my jokes, or at least doing a very convincing impression of it. Happy anniversary.

For a couple you love

  • Happy anniversary to two people who make the whole thing look worth it. Here's to many more.
  • You've built something rare and lovely together. Congratulations on another year of it.
  • Watching you two is a masterclass in how it's done. Happy anniversary — you've earned every bit of this.

By the milestone

  • First (paper): One year down, a whole story still to write. Happy anniversary.
  • Fifth (wood): Five years of choosing each other, and it suits you both. Happy anniversary.
  • Tenth (tin): A decade together — and somehow you still make it look like the easy part. Happy anniversary.
  • Twenty-fifth (silver): Twenty-five years of building a life most people only hope for. What an achievement. Happy anniversary.
  • Fiftieth (gold): Fifty years — half a century of the same hand to hold. There are no words big enough, so simply: congratulations, and thank you for showing the rest of us how it's done.

The one trick that makes it land

Take whichever line you like and anchor it to a real memory — from this year, or from the very beginning. "I'd choose you again" is lovely; "I'd choose you again, exactly like the night we missed the last train and didn't care" is unforgettable. Specific beats grand, every time.

Give the year somewhere to live

A marriage is built in places — the restaurant, the doorstep, the town where it started. With Hiii you can pin your anniversary note to one of them, so the message doesn't just get read once and filed away; it waits where the memory happened, ready to be found again next year. And if you want to say more than a card can hold, our guide to writing a love letter that doesn't feel cheesy is the natural next step.

The point of an anniversary card isn't to be original. It's to be specific — to prove, one more year on, that you were paying attention the whole time.
