The card is bought, the pen is uncapped, and the little white rectangle is winning. "Happy birthday" feels too small; anything longer feels like too much. Here's the reassuring part: the birthday message someone actually keeps is almost never the most eloquent one. It's the most specific one.
Below are more than thirty-five things to write — sorted by tone and by who you're writing to — plus a simple formula for when your mind goes blank. Borrow any of them wholesale. Then read the last section, because the real trick to a card someone saves is making it unmistakably about them.
A four-part formula for any card
If you remember one thing, remember this shape. It works for a partner, a coworker, or a cousin you see once a year.
- Open warmly. Their name, and some version of happy birthday — but in your own voice, not the card company's.
- Say one true thing about them. A memory, a quality you admire, an inside joke. This is the part no one else could have written.
- Offer a wish for the year ahead. What you hope this trip around the sun holds for them.
- Sign off like yourself. "Love," "Your favourite," "See you Sunday" — the closing is where the warmth lives.
Skip the middle two and you've written a card anyone could have signed. Nail them and you've written one they'll find in a drawer years from now and smile at.
Heartfelt birthday messages
- I'm so glad the world has you in it — and even gladder I get a front-row seat. Happy birthday.
- Another year of you means another year of the rest of us being luckier for it. Happy birthday.
- You make the people around you feel more like themselves. Thank you for a whole year of that.
- Wishing you a day as generous, funny, and stubbornly kind as you are the other 364.
- Happy birthday to the person I'd choose in any year, at any age. Here's to many more.
- However you feel about the number, know this: you are deeply, specifically loved.
- The world got a little warmer the year you turned up in it. Happy birthday.
- I hope today reminds you how much room you take up in the hearts around you.
Funny birthday messages
- Happy birthday! You're not getting older — you're just becoming a limited edition.
- Another trip around the sun and still nobody's voted you off. Genuinely impressive.
- Congratulations on surviving another year of your own decisions. So proud.
- You're at the age where your back goes out more than you do. Wear it with pride.
- I didn't get you a gift — I got you this card, which is basically the same but more sincere.
- Let's celebrate you the way you deserve: quietly, and with far too much cake.
- You don't look a day over fabulous. Don't fact-check that. Happy birthday.
Short and sweet
For a small card, a group card, or when the feeling is bigger than the space.
- You're one of my favourite people. No notes. Happy birthday.
- So glad you were born. That's the whole card.
- Here's to you — today and every ordinary day after.
- Go be impossible to forget. Happy birthday.
- Older, wiser, and still my favourite. Happy birthday.
- Cheers to you. You've more than earned it.
For the people closest to you
For a partner
Every year with you turns out to be my favourite so far, and I keep thinking it can't be topped, and you keep topping it. Happy birthday, my love.
For a parent
Happy birthday to the person who taught me most of what I know about being one. I hope today gives back even a fraction of what you quietly give the rest of us.
For a best friend
Happy birthday to my emergency contact, my witness, my worst influence, and my favourite person. I'd be lost without you — you literally have my spare keys.
For a sibling
We survived the same childhood and somehow came out the other side as friends. Happy birthday — no one else will ever get the jokes.
For a friend far away
The miles are annoying, but they don't touch the important part: you're still my person. Happy birthday — I'm with you today, wherever the map has us.
For a friend or coworker
- Happy birthday! Hope the day treats you as well as you treat everyone around you.
- Wishing you a year as brilliant as you make the rest of us look. Happy birthday.
- Happy birthday to the best part of the workday. Now go enjoy every minute off it.
- So glad our paths crossed. Have exactly the birthday you deserve.
- Another year of being quietly excellent. Happy birthday — the coffee's on me.
Milestone birthdays
The big ones can carry a little more weight than the years in between.
- Turning 30: Here's to a decade of finally knowing who you are — and pretending you don't. Thirty suits you.
- Turning 40: Forty years of being exactly, unapologetically you. The world adjusted. Happy birthday.
- Turning 50: Half a century in, and still the most curious person in every room. Happy birthday to a proper original.
- Turning 60: Sixty years of stories, and nowhere near out of them. Here's to all the ones still coming.
- Any big number: Some birthdays deserve more than a candle count. This is one of them — you've earned every single year.
For the person who has everything
There's always someone who's impossible to shop for — they buy what they want the moment they want it. But there's one thing they can't order: a moment from their own life, handed back to them by someone who was there.
Instead of another object, give them a memory. Write down the day you're both secretly proud of. Name the thing they did that they've probably forgotten and you never will. That's a gift with no duplicate on any shelf.
The birthday messages people keep are rarely the cleverest. They're the ones that could only have been written about them.
Make it unmistakably theirs
Whichever line you borrow from this page, spend one extra sentence making it specific. A few ways to do it:
- Name a real moment. Not "we've had good times" — the night the car broke down and you laughed until it stopped being funny.
- Write to one person. A card is not an announcement. Say the thing you'd only ever say to them.
- Add a P.S. The postscript is where the best, most offhand lines live. Use it.
- Tie it to a place. "Same time next year, our table" gives the wish somewhere real to happen.
That last one is close to our whole philosophy at Hiii: the warmest messages are tied to a real spot in the world. If you'd like to leave a birthday note somewhere that means something — the restaurant, the doorstep, the city they moved to — you can pin one to the map and let them find it there. And if you're ever short on words for a different occasion, our field guide to notes worth leaving has more prompts to steal.
