What to write in a baby shower card

A baby-shower card is addressed to people standing at the edge of a life they cannot quite imagine yet. Everyone has advice; most parents-to-be already have plenty. What they are more likely to keep is a small message of confidence, warmth, and welcome—something that celebrates the family forming without pretending the months ahead will be effortless.

Whether you are writing to a close friend, colleague, family member, first-time parent, or growing family, these messages will help you fill the card without filling it with clichés.

A simple message formula

Try three parts: celebrate the parents, welcome the baby, and offer one specific hope. For example: You are going to bring so much patience and laughter to this little person's life. We cannot wait to meet them. Wishing your new family slow mornings, good health, and more sleep than everyone keeps predicting.

Short baby-shower messages

  • So happy for you and so excited to meet your little one.
  • Your greatest adventure is nearly here. Congratulations.
  • Wishing your growing family love, health, and a little sleep.
  • This baby is already surrounded by so much love.
  • Tiny person, enormous joy. Congratulations to you both.
  • The countdown is on—we cannot wait to welcome your newest family member.

Sweet messages for parents-to-be

  • Your baby is joining a home already full of warmth, humour, and love. What a beautiful place to begin.
  • Watching your family grow is such a joy. This little one is extraordinarily lucky to have you.
  • May you remember the tiny details: the sleepy stretches, the curled fingers, and the way home changes when they arrive.
  • You do not have to be perfect parents. You only have to keep showing up with the love you already have in abundance.
  • Wishing you confidence on the uncertain days and the ability to notice how quickly the ordinary ones become precious.

Funny baby-shower messages

  • Congratulations on your adorable new alarm clock.
  • Wishing you a healthy baby, easy feeds, and coffee that stays warm long enough to drink.
  • Parenting: because you were getting far too much sleep and personal time.
  • Tiny socks, enormous laundry. You are going to be brilliant.
  • May the baby inherit your best qualities and remain mysteriously free of the others.
  • Congratulations! Your home is about to become louder, messier, and much more interesting.

For a first-time parent

  • Nobody begins knowing exactly what to do. Your baby does not need an expert; they need you.
  • There will be a thousand firsts, including yours. Be gentle with yourself while you learn together.
  • You already care enough to worry whether you will do it well. That love will carry you further than any instruction book.
  • Happy first baby shower. A whole new version of your life—and of you—is almost here.

For a second or later baby

  • Another little person to love and another relationship for your family to grow around. Congratulations.
  • Your home already knows how to hold love; it is simply making room for more.
  • Wishing the new baby a safe arrival and their older sibling a magnificent promotion.
  • The baby may get hand-me-downs, but they will receive a completely original place in your family.

Messages for twins or multiples

  • Twice the tiny socks, twice the stories, and more love than anyone can count.
  • Two new people to meet and two completely different personalities to discover. What an adventure ahead.
  • Wishing you safe arrivals, strong support, and enough arms whenever you need them.
  • Your family is growing by more than one heartbeat. We are overjoyed for you.

For adoption, fostering, or surrogacy

Follow the language the family uses and celebrate without making assumptions about pregnancy or biology.

  • So much love, patience, and hope have led your family to this moment. We are thrilled for you.
  • Families are built in many ways, and this little one is already deeply wanted and loved.
  • Wishing you a gentle transition as you learn each other's rhythms and begin life together.
  • What a long-awaited, wholehearted welcome this baby has waiting for them.

For a colleague or someone you do not know closely

  • Congratulations on the wonderful news. Wishing you and your family every happiness.
  • Warmest wishes for the baby's safe arrival and the joyful months ahead.
  • It has been lovely sharing in your excitement. All the best for this next chapter.
  • Wishing your growing family health, happiness, and many beautiful firsts.

Be careful with advice and assumptions

Skip comments about bodies, birth plans, sleep, feeding, or what a “real” family should look like. Avoid promising that every moment will be magical. Pregnancy and the path to parenthood can be complicated in ways you may not know. A warm message that follows the parents' own language is always safer than an intimate assumption.

Add the line only you can write

Mention what you admire in the parents, a quality you hope the baby inherits, or a small tradition you cannot wait to share. If the baby has already arrived, use our guide to writing a new-baby card. For the exhausted months ahead, a practical small way to show someone love may mean even more than the card.

The loveliest baby-shower message does not predict who the child will become. It tells the family how warmly they are already awaited.
