Ask someone to tell you a story and they almost always start with where. On the corner by the bakery. In the back seat on the drive home. At the top of the hill where the wind never stops. Place is how memory files itself.
Hiii is built on that instinct. Every note you leave is pinned to an exact point on the map — not a feed, not a folder, a place. It sounds like a small design choice. It changes everything about how a memory feels to make and to find.
The oldest memory trick still works
Two and a half thousand years ago, orators memorised entire speeches by walking an imagined building and leaving each idea in a room. We call it the method of loci — the memory palace. It works because human memory is spatial before it is anything else. We are very bad at remembering lists and very good at remembering rooms.
A map is a memory palace you didn't have to invent. The bench, the bridge, the flat you moved out of years ago — the coordinates are already loaded with feeling. Hiii just gives you somewhere to write it down.
A note in place is a different object
A message in a chat thread is addressed to a person. A note pinned to a place is addressed to a moment — and left there for whoever finds it, including a future version of you.
- It waits. A note tied to a place is patient in a way a notification never is.
- It's specific. "Here" means something exact, and exactness is what makes a memory feel true.
- It's discoverable. Someone can stumble onto your note simply by standing where you stood.
The best keepsakes were never meant to be filed. They were meant to be found again.
What we're building toward
Under the map, Hiii is a quiet argument: that the internet flattened where into nowhere, and that we lost something when it did. Pinning a memory back down — to a street, a shoreline, a doorway — is a way of giving it weight again.
So we'll keep writing here about place, memory, and the small rituals of staying close to the people who matter. If that's your kind of thing, start with a note of your own and leave it somewhere that means something.
